Abstract

Astraforge self-manufacturing spacecraft proposes an advanced spacecraft capable of autonomously manufacturing, repairing, and replacing selected components while operating in space. The concept integrates In space-additive manufacturing, autonomous robotics, artificial intelligence, smart materials, and resource-efficient engineering to reduce dependence on Earth-based resupply missions. AstraForge would utilize raw materials carried onboard or resources available in the space environment to fabricate essential structural parts, tools, protective elements, and replacement components when required. An intelligent monitoring system would continuously detect component damage or failure and initiate suitable manufacturing and repair operations. This approach can increase spacecraft reliability, mission duration, adaptability, and operational independence while reducing launch mass, maintenance complexity, and resupply costs. The proposed system represents a step toward self-sustaining and autonomus spacescraft, with potential applications in long-duration missions, lunar and Martian exploration, deep-space missions, and future space habitats. Unlike conventional spacecraft, which are launched with a fixed set of components and limited replacement options, AstraForge is envisioned as an adaptive manufacturing ecosystem capable of modifying and extending its own capabilities according to mission requirements. The system can convert stored raw materials into functional components through automated fabrication and robotic assembly. In future applications, the concept could also incorporate materials obtained from extraterrestrial resources, enabling greater independence during lunar, Martian, or deep-space missions. A key feature of AstraForge is its potential to progressively reduce dependence on Earth. Instead of carrying every possible replacement component, the spacecraft can carry raw manufacturing material and convert it into different parts when required.
