Abstract

Assistive technologies play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities. Traditional wheelchairs often require manual effort or basic joystick control, which may not be suitable for all users, especially those with limited mobility or motor impairments. This project proposes an Android phone-controlled smart wheelchair that can be operated using both voice commands and a touch screen interface, providing a more accessible and user-friendly solution. The proposed system integrates an Android application with a microcontroller-based wheelchair control unit using wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The user can control the movement of the wheelchair—forward, backward, left, and right—through simple voice commands or by interacting with the touchscreen interface on the mobile device. Voice recognition technology processes spoken commands and converts them into control signals, while the touch screen provides an alternative manual control option. The system also includes obstacle detection sensors such as ultrasonic sensors to enhance safety by preventing collisions. These sensors continuously monitor the surroundings and automatically stop or redirect the wheelchair when obstacles are detected. Additional features such as emergency stop, speed control, and real-time monitoring can be incorporated to improve functionality and safety. Overall, the proposed smart wheelchair system offers a flexible, efficient, and cost-effective solution for mobility assistance. By combining voice recognition, mobile control, and embedded systems, it enhances independence and ease of use for individuals with disabilities. The system can be widely applied in healthcare environments and smart assistive technologies, contributing to improved accessibility and quality of life.
