Abstract

The Math Gesture system is designed to provide a simple and interactive way of solving mathematical problems using hand gestures instead of traditional input devices. In most digital platforms, users are required to type equations using a keyboard or depend on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to interpret handwritten content, which often results in errors and reduces the overall user experience. This research aims to overcome these limitations by introducing a gesture-based input method where users can write mathematical expressions in the air using their fingers. A camera captures the hand movements in real time, and the system tracks finger positions to map the motion onto a virtual canvas, allowing the equation to appear on the screen just like writing on a board. The system uses image processing techniques to accurately detect hand landmarks and interpret finger gestures. Certain gestures are also assigned specific functions, such as clearing the screen or submitting the written equation. Once the equation is submitted, it is processed by an AI-based mathematical reasoning model that understands the structure of the expression and generates the correct solution. The entire system is developed using Python and implemented through a web-based interface, making it easy to access and use without special hardware. This approach not only improves accessibility but also makes learning mathematics more engaging and interactive. Overall, the MathGesture system demonstrates how artificial intelligence and computer vision can be combined to create a practical and user-friendly solution for mathematics learning and problem solving.
