Abstract

This study focuses on a comparative analysis of derivative market participation in the stocks of HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, two of the leading private sector banks in India. The research examines the trading behavior, volume, open interest, and price fluctuations in the futures and options segments of both bank stocks. The objective of the study is to identify the level of investor participation and analyze how derivative trading influences the performance and volatility of these stocks in the capital market. The study is based on secondary data collected from stock exchange reports, company annual reports, financial websites, and market publications. Various statistical and financial tools such as trend analysis, comparative analysis, and percentage analysis are used to interpret the data. The research highlights the growth of derivative trading in the Indian financial market and evaluates the role of derivatives in risk management, speculation, and price discovery. The findings of the study reveal that both HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank stocks have significant participation in the derivative market due to their high liquidity and strong market capitalization. However, differences are observed in trading volumes, investor preference, volatility patterns, and open interest positions. The study concludes that derivative market participation plays a vital role in influencing stock market movements and provides investors with opportunities for hedging and portfolio diversification.
