Abstract

Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture (AMBA) protocols are widely used in System-on-Chip (SoC) design to enable efficient and structured communication between high-speed and low-speed peripherals. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Finite State Machine (FSM)-controlled bridge between the Advanced High-performance Bus (AHB) and the Advanced Peripheral Bus (APB). The AHB bus is designed for high-speed communication with features such as pipelined operations, burst transfers, and high bandwidth, whereas the APB is optimized for low-power, low-complexity communication with peripheral devices. The proposed bridge acts as an interface that converts AHB transactions into APB-compatible signals, ensuring seamless communication between the two buses despite their differences in speed and protocol structure. The design incorporates a well-defined FSM to control the sequence of operations, including address decoding, data transfer, and control signal generation. This structured approach ensures proper synchronization, reduces data transfer latency, and maintains signal integrity throughout the communication process. The entire system is implemented using Hardware Description Language (HDL), ensuring modularity and scalability, and is verified through simulation to validate its functional correctness. Simulation results confirm that the bridge successfully handles read and write operations, maintains protocol compliance, and achieves reliable data transfer between AHB and APB interfaces. Overall, the proposed FSM-controlled AHB-to-APB bridge provides an efficient, low-complexity, and scalable solution for integrating different bus architectures within modern SoC designs, making it highly suitable for embedded systems and real-time applications.
