Abstract

This paper presents a high-efficiency electric vehicle (EV) on-board fast charging system based on a three-port partial power processing (PPP) converter integrated with a Sliding Mode Controller (SMC). The proposed architecture enables simultaneous power flow between the grid, battery, and auxiliary storage, ensuring flexible energy management and improved system performance. Unlike conventional full power processing chargers, the PPP approach allows most of the charging power to be directly transferred to the battery, thereby reducing conversion losses, component stress, and overall system size. The inclusion of the SMC enhances system robustness, providing fast dynamic response, superior voltage regulation, and strong disturbance rejection under varying operating conditions. The system operates in multiple modes depending on input and battery voltage levels, ensuring optimal power distribution and efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate improved steady-state and transient performance, reduced output voltage ripple, and enhanced response to load and line variations compared to traditional PI-controlled systems. The proposed charger achieves a peak efficiency of 96.13%, highlighting its effectiveness for next-generation EV applications. Overall, the integration of PPP topology with advanced control offers a compact, cost-effective, and high-performance solution for reliable and efficient EV fast charging.
