Fortifying Cloud Environments: Integrating Zero Trust Architecture and Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Data Protection

Cloud computing has revolutionized how organizations store data, deliver digital services, and manage workloads, offering significant benefits in scalability, flexibility, and cost efficiency. However, these distributed and dynamic environments also introduce heightened cybersecurity risks. Traditional perimeter-based security models, which assume implicit trust within network boundaries, are increasingly insufficient against sophisticated attacks exploiting identity weaknesses, misconfigurations, and excessive privileges.
Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have emerged as complementary approaches to address these challenges. ZTA enforces continuous verification, least-privilege access, and micro-segmentation, while AI provides behavioral analytics, real-time threat detection, and automated incident response. This study systematically reviews literature from 2015 to 2025 to explore the combined role of ZTA and AI in strengthening cloud security. Findings reveal that ZTA establishes a robust structural foundation, while AI enhances adaptive, intelligence-driven threat detection and response. The study presents an integrated conceptual framework and practical insights for organizations seeking resilient and proactive cloud-security strategies.
