Managing municipal solid waste (MSW) in
rapidly urbanizing countries like India is a
growing concern, with over 62 million tonnes
generated annually. Traditional landfill-based
methods are unsustainable, prompting the rise
of Waste-to-Energy (WTE) technologies that
reduce waste and produce clean energy. This
study explores various WTE methods like
incineration, gasification, and RDF within
India’s context, focusing on technological,
environmental, and policy dimensions. A key
case study is the Jawahar Nagar WTE plant in
Hyderabad, which processes 1,200 tonnes of
waste daily and generates 19.8 MW of
electricity. The study highlights operational
details, challenges in scaling WTE systems
(like cost and segregation), and proposes
strategies such as better public awareness,
cleaner technologies, and policy reforms to
promote a circular economy
